Extra-Curricular Organizations & Activities

Students are encouraged to participate in extra curricular organizations and activities which further opportunities for the development of the whole child. Participation requires scholarship: grades must average “C” with no grade lower than “C-” unless more stringent requirements are imposed by the organization. Moreover, participation in an extra-curricular activity requires the student’s full day attendance on the day of the event.

Student Council

The purpose of student government is to develop responsible Christian leaders, good citizens, and school spirit. Since its goal is one of service to the school, Church and community, officers are elected to fulfill positions that foster a spirit of Christian attitudes, fair play and wholesome respect.

To participate in the election for student council officers and commissioners, a student must meet the following criteria:

1. Scholarship grades must average a “C+”, with no grade lower than a “C-”.
2. Conduct and effort grades must be satisfactory (1 or 2, A or B).
3. Specific requirements of the position as stated in the by-laws.

These criteria must be met for election to student council. In addition, they must be maintained during the entire year of office, not just at the end of a report card period.

C.J.S.F.

The California Junior Scholarship Federation encourages high standards of scholarship, service, and citizenship on the part of junior high students. St. Perpetua School complies with the rules of the federation as stated in its by-laws.

Seventh & eighth grade students apply for membership-using grades earned the previous trimester. All grades must be “C’” or better. Students must earn a total of 12 points by assigning a value of A=3, B=1, for core subjects. (Religion, Literature, English, Mathematics, Social Studies & Science), and an additional 1 point for 10 hours of service. Inappropriate citizenship will eliminate students from membership and result in debarring.

Students earn life membership when they are members for 5 out of 6 trimesters during 7th & 8th grades. A gold seal on the graduation diploma indicates life membership.

St. Perpetua Choristers

The youth choir, under the direction of the parish music ministry, participates in liturgical celebrations of the parish and school. Students in grades four through eight, in both St. Perpetua School and parish, may join.

Instrumental Music & Band

Instruction in instrumental music and band is made available to students. There is a charge for this program.

Scouting Programs

Students may participate in various scouting programs.

Sports (After School & C.Y.O.)

Students may participate in after school sports programs that are offered through the C.Y.O.

Altar Servers

Students from grades 5-8 can be altar servers. A parish liturgical minister trains them. They serve at school and parish liturgies.

Jr-High Dances/Parties

Catholic schools in Contra Costa County sponsor night dances periodically throughout the school year for seventh and eighth graders. Students attend by invitation. These dances provide sufficient social interaction among junior high students. Mixed parties become a source of great distraction and are discouraged. If eighth grade parties are scheduled, they should be after graduation.
